On January 5, 2015 I posted a video on this blog titled Ringing In The New Year In New Orleans. I also posted it in the blogs on my magic websites www.LouSerrano.com and www.LouSerranoMagic.com. It’s a video where I share my recent leisure trip to the Big Easy. It has nothing to do with marketing or my magic business.
A friend and fellow magician asked why I posted the video? It obviously takes a considerable amount of effort to edit and post the video. How could this video help in promoting my business?
It got me thinking. What’s rather obvious to me isn’t always obvious to others. The same goes for you. There are things you know that you probably take for granted that can be enormous revelations to other people.
It’s a commonly accepted idea that all things being equal, and given the choice, people would rather do business with others they know,… Continue reading
I received a phone call a week ago to perform on The Kennedy Administration podcast. I would have the opportunity to perform an eight-minute set of magic followed by an eight-minute interview.
I had never heard of this podcast, so I did a little research. The podcast is shot in front of a live audience of about 80 people in a nightclub in the heart of Los Angeles, and I figured it would be an interesting experience.
As I got closer to the date, I wanted to cancel. It was a date that didn’t pay, and the only thing I’d get out of it was exposure, but the exposure I’d receive wouldn’t be for my target audience. I perform primarily for high-end social and corporate events. This podcast is geared towards a younger generation of “hipsters”, and I‘m much too old to qualify as a “hipster”.
The one thing I was… Continue reading

A while back I got a call from a friend who wanted me to do a magic show at her child’s birthday party. At the time, I didn’t do kids parties. I had stopped doing them for about 5 or 6 years. About a year ago I started booking them again, but that’s another story.
I recommended someone who I thought would do a great job, and who could actually use the work. Since the party was for a friend of mine, I was present when the performer arrived. I was surprised to see her with a very serious look on her face. As she put her props together getting ready for the show, she was very focused. When someone would interrupt her by asking if she was the magician for the party, she’d say yes, and then continue with what she was doing. She almost looked annoyed that someone was interrupting her while she was setting up.
When it… Continue reading
Using video in your marketing is one of the most powerful ways to generate attention, leads, and income to your business. It can also generate attention to your cause or mission, and it can create a presence for you online. There benefits to using video marketing are many. I recorded this before the start of my first show of the week in the Close-Up Gallery at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. There is one question I ask myself before the start of every week of performances. “Why should anyone come in to see my show?” With so many magicians performing on the same night, how am I going to get noticed?
Here are three ideas to think about when putting together a presentation of any kind. They may help in your journey in differentiating yourself from your competition.

One of the best ways to build your business is by speaking in public. It increases your visibility, attracts new customers, and establishes you as the expert in your field. Whether you’re a professional public speaker, entertainer, real estate agent, lawyer, contractor, or a plumber, everyone can benefit from speaking to the right audience.
There are some very intelligent and articulate people who tend to clam up when put in front of an audience, and I believe the reason is fear. Maybe it’s the fear of failure, the fear of embarrassment, or the fear that others may think that they don’t know what they’re talking about. This is normal. Everyone who first gets up in front of an audience has these fears. The way to conquer these fears is to actually do it. The only way to get better as a public speaker is to speak often. Practice and repetition are the key elements to becoming a great public… Continue reading
I recently posted a video called The Million Dollar Secret, and although I received overwhelming support for the idea I shared, I still had a few people who were concerned with some perceived underlying negative issues. One issue that was brought to my attention was the idea that I was “using” people to gain something from a relationship.
Let me state right here that I don’t believe in “using” anyone for anything. Instead, I believe in building relationships. When you build “meaningful” relationships with others, all parties gain something from the relationship.
The most meaningful relationships are based on mutual trust, respect, shared values, passions, and sense of purpose. This applies to all relationships whether it’s with your friends, spouse, business partner, or mentor. Basing relationships on the idea that you can “use” them for certain purposes is a formula destined for failure.
One thing you should know about me is that I LOVE people! It’s one of the… Continue reading
Who am I being? A question I must ask myself every morning when I wake up. I’m a magician, a business speaker, internet marketer, and business consultant. But if I really am all these things, then what am I doing? It isn’t enough to just SAY I am these things. In order to BE, I must DO. It’s an illness that plagues us all. Not being who we say we are.
A painting doesn’t paint itself. An artist must sit and put paint to canvas. Brushstroke after brushstroke until the painting is complete. An artist can’t just begin painting after painting without ever completing one and still call himself an artist. To call oneself an artist, a person must create art.
For me to be a magician, I must create magic in the minds of my audience. Without an audience, there is no magic. To be a business speaker, I must get in front of a group of… Continue reading
